This route starts from East Common (public road) and heads generally northeastwards to a junction with Harpenden 2 byway then continues northeastwards and eastwards to Ayres End Lane (public road). Legal History 1938: The route is shown as a green lane (green dots) on the Hertfordshire County Council ROW survey. Map St Albans Rural 7 (Herts 21 SW). 20 Jun 1953: Harpenden 1 and Wheathampstead 2 were recorded as CRB (Carriage Road used as a Bridleway) on the original definitive map and statement. DM sheets DM3-14 (TL11SW) and DM3-15 (TL11SE). 31 Dec 1977: Harpenden 1 and Wheathampstead 2 were shown as byways open to all traffic on the special review draft map and statement. DM sheets SR-55 (TL11SW) and SR-56 (TL11SE). 2 May 2006: NERC exemption s.67(1) as route shown on DM as Byway Open to All Traffic.
