Section 57 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 enables the Secretary of State to make regulations relating to definitive maps and statements, including at section 57(2), ‘for the method of showing in definitive maps and statements anything which is required to be so shown’.
The relevant regulations are The Wildlife and Countryside (Definitive Maps and Statements) Regulations 1993. At Schedule 1, these specify the ways in which each sort of highway is to be shown in the definitive map.
By virtue of section 57(1), the notation used in a definitive map modification order is to be the same as would be used on a definitive map.
